Oilsands deposits buried below open pit mining depths of 80 meters are only accessible by producing through well bores. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) involves drilling two parallel horizontal wells separated vertically by approximately five meters. To reduce oil viscosity and maximize production, steam is continually injected through the top injector well while oil is recovered through the bottom producer well via gravity and pressure differential.
